Matthew Modine stars in JACOB, one of the Bible's most compelling family
sagas, in the TNT original two-hour mini-series.
JACOB and his twin
brother, Esau, are the sons of Isaac. Isaac believes that Esau, the older
and stronger of the two, is the rightful heir of Isaac and Abraham, while
Isaac's wife, Rebekah, believes it is Jacob. One day, Jacob is able to convince
Esau to give up his birthright in exchange for food, and then deceives the
dying Isaac into believing that he is Esau so he receives Isaac's blessing.
His brother is outraged, and Jacob flees in fear for his life. For many years
after, Jacob's life is a succession of trials and tribulations. It is he who
is deceived by his scheming uncle, Laban, who exploits him for seven years
by forcing him to work as his indentured servant in exchange for his daughter,
Rachel's, hand in marriage. After seven years, Laban deceives Jacob again
by forcing his older daughter, Leah, to take Rachel's place in the dark tent
the night of the wedding. By doing so, Laban forces Jacob to stay for another
seven years, after which he can finally marry Rachel. Jacob finally decides
to return to Canaan with Rachel where he must face his brother Esau and his
army. In the end, the story of JACOB teaches us that a man can only
have what is rightfully his, what he works for, what he earns by the sweat
of his brow.
JACOB is one of
twelve mini-series produced under "THE BIBLE" umbrella. It is an
international co-production of TNT and LUX, the Italian independent production
company; Germany's Beta Taurus; and the Italian Network RAI.
